Adding this B&M SuperCooler keeps the ATF and transmission cooler, and keeping a vehicle’s transmission cool is essential for dependability, especially in performance applications. The unit is designed to be very efficient for its size and weight, to cool much better than an ordinary ‘fin and tube’ cooler, and to reduce the risk of lube system failure. Using fluxless, oven brazed construction for vibration resistance, it is built out of lightweight aluminum alloy and features a revolutionary ‘stacked plate’ design with multiple oil flow paths. The unit monitors resistance to flow by allowing a controlled amount of ATF to pass through a self-regulating orifice. Controlled by viscosity, thicker ATF is returned directly to lube through two bypass openings in the stacked plate core, while thinner ATF is directed through the core to cool as operating temperatures increase.

This cooler is very weak. It is made of a thin soft unspecified grade of Mexican aluminum. This is OK when used with small flexible hoses normally used in the average trans cooler application. I have used several for this purpose. However, when used as an oil cooler with lines to match the 1/2 pipe ports, the hoses can put too much stress on the bosses and the thin thin thin lower plate they are mounted on. You need some sort of support to take any stress off of the bosses. It would be best to start out with the most flexible lines you can find from your hose store. Some industrial hoses are already too stiff. As the larger hoses age and suffer from heat, they will get stiffer and vibration alone will cause them to stress the thin Mexican aluminum they now use. They should have made it thick enough to take the forces imposed on it by typical engine oil cooler lines. Say, dash 10s or dash 12s. And, all lines get stiffer with heat and age, so engine movement and vibration will end up putting stress on a previously stress-free installation. Of course, if you use slip-on and clamped hoses, they are more flexible, and are less likely to cause a failure. In all fairness, in the instructions, B&M says not to induce any stress on the bosses when installing fittings, but no mention is made of the inability of the bosses and lower plate to take any force at all from larger oil cooler hoses.I experienced a loss of oil pressure and darn near lost an engine from this series of cooler failing. It took a while, as aluminum does not fail immediately from repeated small stresses.I ended up with an aluminum reinforcing bar, cut from 1/4inch thick angle, between the lower mounting plate and the bosses. It is through-bolted on either side of each of the two bosses to grab them by the flats of the hex. The mounting bolts go through both it and the lower flange, so any hose-induced force is transferred from the bosses on the nipples to whatever the cooler mounts to, and does not affect the bottom plate of the cooler itself. Pictures on request.I would give it five stars as an oil cooler if it had a stronger bottom plate. Seems to me that B&M/Long could spend a quarter on each unit for a thicker/stronger bottom plate to make it useful as an oil cooler.

Used this on my 2003 Silverado SS truck and it worked great to keep the transmission tempurtures much cooler during hot weather or heavy driving. The difference was very noticeable on the trans temp gauge. Overall good quality, easy to mount, but the fittings are tricky to find.

I bought this cooler to replace the Hayden 679 I had on my 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser. The Hayden is a great cooler, and I have no complaints. I just wanted to try a bigger cooler. Height and width are slightly bigger than the Hayden, but it is about twice as thick. It lowered the trans fluid, on average, 10-15 degrees. The one thing I really like about this cooler is that it does not have fins. On a trip to Joshua Tree, I had driven through a swarm of bugs. When I got home I blasted the cooler with water and cleaned all the bugs off. With a finned cooler you usually have to clean from the back of the cooler forward to get all the little parts that got into the fins. With this cooler just hit it with the garden hose and you’re done. The one, and only, thing I didn’t like too much is the thin metal that the bosses for the fittings are attached to. Backing up the boss with a wrench when attaching a fitting is a MUST. Otherwise you’ll probably twist the boss right off of the cooler.Overall, this is a great buy. It does its job, cleans up easily and looks cool. Even with the thin metal holding the fitting bosses, I would recommend this cooler. Just don’t forget to back up the bosses.

Great unit, I is large, will need to make sure it will fit and with enough clearance for air to flow. This is the best upgrade I have ever used on a car. Had to build brackets from aluminum sticks from Home Depot to get the job done right. Installed this unit on my 2008 Saturn VUE and I love it. It feels and drives lot better. You will notice the difference. I didn’t get this for towing or anything like that, I just dive up many hills on my daily commute, 150 to 200 miles a day and I noticed the powerful and comfortable shifting. I did not bypass the radiator with this install, I let the transmission oil run into the radiator for first cooling and then go to this cooler for more cooling before returning to the transmission. The ports on the unit are larger than the standard transmission ports guarantying no restriction of flow. It is light weight but can get heavy once full of oil so I recommend not attaching to radiator or AC condenser and to leave room for air flow.

Doesn’t leak. Cools very well. Keeps temps below 190F at all times with a combined weight of around 16,000lbs with a 4L80E

I went a bit overboard on the size for my work truck, took some work to get it to fit in place, and it was absolutely worth it, my Transmission is staying nice and cool when pushing or pulling heavy loads. I will not blow another Transmission due to overeating again.Highly recommend this product

Leaks. On my third one and leaking. Bad product don’t recommend. Now I’m out the money because the return window expired.

I’m using this, along with a 220V electric fan blowing through it, to cool the air coming out of my air compressor pump (3.9HP, 125 PSI max). After about an hour of steady use, it’s dropping the temperature from around 172F at the compressor head down to 70F at the tank inlet.Almost all the moisture condenses out and is separated with a Norgen air/water separator. After painting an entire car, I drained my tank and maybe a tablespoon of water came out. Without the cooler and air/water separator, it would have been many cups of condensed water.Be careful with the fittings. Use a wrench on the cooler side while tightening against it to prevent damaging the cooler. I damaged my first one when replacing the compressor pump, but this was obviously my own fault and not an issue with the oil cooler.

Installed the unit where one had been for 2yrs. Only used equipment 6 times has already started leaking between flukes. Only has 40 psi going to it.
