This is a convenient and easy to install bag which increases the space inside the vehicle for occupants and quick grab gear. Depending on your roofline, it might be quick and easy to grab from at a rest area as well. Installing this on my Ford Flex was quick, about 5 minutes, after I read the directions and waxed the zipper. It would require a step ladder for anyone shorter than 6’4″ on a Flex or other full SUV, and I barely managed stepping on the side rails of the door. (Note, kayakers have steps that fit into the door latch to give better roof access if you are confident on foot pegs.) This is a Flex height issue though, not a bag issue, just factor your vehicle height, your height, and ladder needs. The bottom of the bag is pretty grippy, so I am not worried about the straps being the only thing holding the bag. Of course you need the straps, but they won’t be fighting the bag.**Notes:–Fabric is very thick and rubberized; I have high confidence of water resistance. This also makes me worry that long term storage folds might lead to cracks, but that will need to wait and see.–Zippers were very stiff until the grease was applied; now, they move quite easily.–The hooks are unpadded. Without a roof rack, I might consider putting a layer of self-stick foam padding in the hook to protect my vehicle paint.–This is like folding a tent. You really need to be thoughtful of the way you unpack it from the sack if you want it to go back inside fully.**Storage visualization for 10 cu ft, in those dimensions–Two 27-gallon storage totes that are 30x20x15 would be a quick way to put stuff inside, but might leave the edges flappy, which the vendor recommends against.–Six milk crates would fill this with room to spare on top if they are overfilled. (16 tall vs 11 for milk crates)–Six high school backpacks could be arranged to fit.–Five camp chairs (although you might want to layer a picnic blanket below to pad the vehicle roof or avoid bumpy roads).–Four full-size roller carryon bags–Three checkable suitcases would likely fit.UPDATE AFTER AN 8 HOUR DRIVE- We easily fit five fully-loaded school backpacks and then packed small items around to fill it out. There was room for more thin items. across the top.- It went through a torrential downpour where cars were pulling off the expressway for safety and our gear stayed bone dry.- Zero slippage on the straps, everything stayed securely in place.

I picked up the Pro Tech Designs 18 Cubic Feet Rooftop Cargo Bag to expand storage capacity for road trips and weekend getaways. The bag is made from heavy-duty PVC semi-coated mesh, which feels tough and well-suited for resisting wind and debris. It features a large waterproof zipper that runs halfway across the middle of three sides of the bag for easier access. The material is also UV-resistant, which adds peace of mind for long drives in direct sunlight. With a footprint of 48″ x 36″ x 18″, it offers ample storage for duffel bags, sleeping gear, or bulky items. The bag comes in black and with four tie-down straps and a small tube of silicone lube to keep the zipper working smoothly -both thoughtful additions. While this cargo bag is designed to be used with or without a roof rack, I’ve had experience with similar cargo bags and wouldn’t recommend going rack less. On newer vehicles, the roof panels aren’t designed to support that kind of weight, especially when in motion. The vibrations, bumps, and even mild gravel roads can cause the roof to dent or flex inward over time. Even for cars with side rails, a cross bar kit is required to add support. For best results and to avoid damage, I’d suggest pairing this bag with a roof basket and crossbar system. As far as travel gear goes, this cargo bag does what it’s supposed to -keeps items dry, shields them from UV rays, and holds everything together on the move. For what it cost, the quality appears dependable, and I’m content knowing my gear is protected. If you already have a proper roof rack and need extra protective storage space for your trips, this bag is worth considering.

ALL the stars! This review is of the 15 cubic foot size Cargo Carrier. This is very large and spacious! We were able to fit two tents, two carry-on size rolling bags, one extra large duffel bag, two sleeping bags, two king size quilts, & we still had room to spare. Definitely a space saver for inside the vehicle. I eas very impressed with how much it holds! It was easy to secure & stayed put for our entire 10 hour trip (each way) without issue. We did experience rain during our travels, but our things stayed perfectly dry.It is made out of heavy duty, sturdy material that is designed for all weather conditions as described in the listing. The zipper heads are large enough to attach a lock so your luggage can be secure at rest stops, gas stations, etc. It also has a Velcro flag that covers & protects the zipper heads when closed. Comes with a nice little carrying bag & folds up nice & neat for easy storage.Pro tips: When you fold it up, leave a little space between the zipper heads so when you fold it up it doesn’t trap in air. It fold up much easier and compact this way. Be sure to place on your vehicle with the zippered part facing the back of the vehicle. You don’t want to have the zippered area facing against oncoming wind & rain. I feel like it would still be waterproof, because it’s made so well, but why put it to that extreme test?! We really love this cargo carrier. Having all that extra storage space outside of the vehicle makes travel inside the vehicle so much more comfortable!
