The setup instructions are very sparse. I didn’t get it connected on the first try, I consider that a black mark for any network device as simple as this one. Following the instructions for both the standard and alternate setup methods several times each led me to check the Smart Oil Gauge website. Lo and behold, detailed instructions that worked! It only took me about 90 minutes to get this far, and I hadn’t touched a wrench yet. If they had labeled their instructions a “quick start” guide and provided a QR code for the webpage or at least make the information there more obvious than an afterthought I wouldn’t be complaining right now.The installation, by contrast, was ridiculously easy. I had to buy the adapter for the 1 1/2 inch female pipe threads on my tank. You might want to check that before you order, I couldn’t find it on Amazon so. you need to order directly. Also, when they say that a standard reducer won’t work, believe them. The proper adapter has an ultrasonic waveguide in it to prevent unwanted reflections from messing with the readings. I’m assuming this might be behind some negative reviews claiming unpredictable performance. Also a probable issue is the native, mechanical tank gauge. It’s often a float on a lever (think of an old fashioned toilet tank ball float) where the lever extends sideways to float in the tank. When I opened the tank plug I took a flashlight and looked inside so I would know the layout. The float arm and float extend directly under the fitting I installed the device in. There may well be enough scattering off of this arm to disrupt the device function. (this would be the other thing I would expect causes some of the performance issues noted in reviews). I will monitor its performance and if it does anything hinkey I will have to spend an entire Saturday replumbing the fill fitting to reverse the float arm and hopefully remove any interference.Once I had hooked it up (no pipe dope on the device threads and no pipe wrench either please) it worked instantly. Other complaints I saw here were about accuracy. ?? What did you have before, was your float gauge THAT good? The value in this is that it will tell you how much oil you have in quarters of a tank, although it will report down to eighths. It’s not at all difficult to monitor both this device and the float gauge to get a feel for the levels reported. I wonder if these folks realize the technology that goes into modern cars to be able to report fuel remaining in terms of miles to go? It sure isn’t going to fit on a 1 x 3 inch PCB along with a Wi-Fi interface, not for $180.All in all, I think this is going to be well worth the investment if only because it will make it a lot harder to forget to order oil. because I forgot to check the tank. It will email, alert, and/or text you information that you select when you hit certain milestones. I will increase my rating to 5 stars if this thing makes it for a while without hiccups, in the meantime I feel it’s worth the $180 to try it out.

I must be honest, I bought this Wi-Fi gauge, not expecting much from it. To my surprise, it’s past every single expectations that I had. Even though I’m a senior, I love technology and this Wi-Fi oil gauge blew me away. It was a cinch to install and set up. When you first install it, it may read a full tank of fuel oil, even though you may not have that much in the tank. That’s exactly what happened to me. I left it alone for about four hours and then I went back to the app on my phone and all of a sudden it was reading the correct amount of oil That I had.I’m guessing it needs a few hours to calibrate the quantity of oil the first time.

First – USPS is horrible, left the package out in the snow at the end of my long driveway, thankfully Amazon notified me of the delivery. This device is awesome. Not only does it read the tank it gives approximates of daily, weekly and monthly use it tells you the expected days left. There is a usage graph as well. I did have an issue with setup, it simply would not connect to my Asus router. I called tech support and they were super helpful as well as being very patient. In the end it needed to be connected via a WiFi extender that I had laying around which is what they told me to try! It had nothing to do with bad WiFI coverage it just would not connect and report to my router. With these outrageous oil prices it is very helpful to get accurate readings whenever i want, highly recommend!

This gauge and software provides detailed measurement of fuel oil contained within a tank, using ultrasound and some sophisticated software. This is very helpful for anyone who heats with oil and encourages smart use of an expensive commodity. It’s an American made product. My plumber suggested that I also get the adaptor to precisely fit the existing oil tank tap. He installed it in less than 1/2 hour and measurements are performed automatically at regular intervals. Because it’s been extremely cold for several weeks, I check the level 1 – 2 times a day on my phone. The software reports how much fuel is being consumed and guesstimates when the tank will be at levels where I’ll need a refill. This is a great tool and I highly recommend it.

When it works it seems to work fine and take accurate readings, but that’s WHEN it works. It wasn’t easy to program. The troubleshooting guide wasn’t easy to follow and I had a professional doing it. When it works it seems to take a reading every 2 days, which is fine, however, that is not a set up option, but I’m OK with that. The problem is that it will take a reading, and then not take another reading for a week or two or three, then suddenly it’ll take a reading, then stop working again. It’s a good idea but obviously has some bugs to work out. Not recommended.
