I bought this starter to retro-fit on an old John Deere 522 snow blower. It has a HS50 Tecumseh engine. The engine was obviously made to accept the starter. I had to make a few modifications however. The engine block had the two lower mounting holes but they weren’t threaded. I had to tap to accommodate the ¼” screws. I also had to remove the small flywheel cover and punch out the embossed cutout to allow the starter access to the ring gear (teeth on the flywheel.) Additionally, the two long screws provided to secure the starter switch on the top housing stripped out so I had to buy a couple of stainless sheet metal screws #8 x 21/2”. These worked perfectly.I have to say this starter was really easy to install. It seems to be very well built. I couldn’t be happier with the purchase. My snow blower started on the first try. Just do your research to make sure you have the right model for your engine. Make sure your flywheel has teeth on it or the electric starter is not a possibility. This is a great product and I highly recommend.

Three screws and some inspection and it was in and working. The starter fits my engine perfectly, the only thing I did to insure good fit was to removed the old starter and count the number of splines on the gear to insure proper fit. I then found this starter which actually stated how many splines the gear had. My snow blower is an ancient craftsman the has a newer engine and if spins the engine fast enough for a quick start. Please note that this starter has the cover for the starter gear, some do not. Now, just let it snow.

I have a 50 year old snowblower that i wanted to add an electric starter to. I wasn’t sure that i could do it but it really wasn’t very difficult and works perfectly!Great value for the money.

My neighbor ordered this via amazon, it came about 3 weeks later, he was a little slow to get his snowblower out, when he did he called me, it had no threads in the mounting holes and I had to cut part of the air shroud off, right off the hop it spins 4 or 5 times then slows down if you press again it smokes, removed it spun it for 20 seconds and its so hot you cant touch it. I reached out to the company selling them they told me sorry 30 days have passed, so he spent 160 bucks for junk, don’t make the same mistake!!!

I bought this tecumpseh starter for 5hp snowblower. Model # 33290 33290A 33517….. it spins but does not engage. What can I do? Not happy! Now it started to smoke? Wasted my money. This one was faulty….apiece of junk!

**UPDATE** read to end.Even if I ignore the fact that it took 2 months for my starter to get to me, I’m still extremely disappointed in this company/product. We’ll start with the biggest issue. The first picture shows a side by side comparison of my old starter and the new one. The new one is missing the C-clip at the base of the spring. The second issue is that their plug casing is slightly smaller than the original Tecumseh casing and the supplied cord has to be forced into the receptacle, even after they clearly shave the cord end down to attempt to “fix” the issue. I also had a less than great experience dealing with their customer support. In summary, don’t purchase unless you absolutely need to, and are handy in case there are issues.Update: put C-clip from old starter on and it finally engaged the flywheel, however… After about 10 seconds of turning over the starter smoked.

Perfect fit on my John Deere TRS22 Snowblower with Tecumseh Engine: HSSK50. If your snowblower does not already have electric start you will need a 1/4-20 tap as the bottom two mounting holes are drilled but not tapped. Easy enough to do yourself and well worth it for the convenience of electric start. YouTube it. Would definitely purchase again and very happy. Let it snow baby.

This starter is a joke. The teeth will break on the first time you press the start button. Cheaply made

Warning for those not mechanically inclined, the starter does not come with installation instructions but can be figured out with help of Youtube videos. Self-tapping bolts were much appreciated as I don’t own tap and die set. Discovered the starter gets hot fast with multiple uses and must be allowed to cool down to prevent damage … which is to be expected. Works great, turns it over fast and if it’s going to start, it will. Fairly simple install procedure for a small engine mechanic.
