Review for install on 2001 F-150 XLT SuperCrew with factory remote keyless entry and no factory alarm:Take all my advice as suspect as I’m not a pro just a random nobody DIYer. You must verify all components, connections, safety, manufacturer guidelines for yourself. I assume no liability.Like I said in the title MPC assembles everything you need hardware wise to do the install if you have the chops for getting into tight spaces and a working knowledge of simple electrical wiring connections. Their tip sheet is super helpful as the individual product guides can be quite generic if you buy these components on your own piecemeal. Why did I buy this?- 97-03 F150s are amazingly reliable but older nowadays. I want to warm the engine to keep this beauty running without going outside in the cold or leaving it unattended with the keys in the ignition. This kit does that and more with computer safeguards against cranking issues, safety, and antitheft.MPC’s kits are great for DIY’s. I’ve done 3 remote start kits with various vehicles I’ve owned using MPC kits. The more modern the vehicle the easier the install as new wiring plugs typically allow MPC to ship you a “T” harness that does everything. They call those “plug and play”. This kit is NOT that kit. It requires wiring to various places in the drivers side dash panel, kick panel, and engine compartment. Took me 3 days as a novice DIYer with some experience soldering and working with basic wiring, but you should still get this one or another like it for an older vehicle if you desire a remote starter. MPC will respond extremely fast if you have any questions. I’ve contacted them 3 times (one phone call during the COVID shutdown with a 2011 dodge journey, 2 emails with this install) and they reply in within a few hours typically with detailed responses. Top notch expertise on your exact install.A few things that might be helpful:1. Intimidated by wiring? Relax, buy this anyway and take it to a local stereo installer or dealer for a quick install.2. Still want to do it yourself? good. Read the MPC tipsheet once it ships, allow a few days of vehicle downtime to study and troubleshoot (pros could do it in a half a day or less), contact MPC if you run into anything. I found all wire colors and suggested locations to be accurate with really detailed “why’s” behind everything too.3. With my 2001 F150, I’m dumb and mistook the panic alarm for a security system which is not the case, if you can open your door from inside the vehicle after arming with the factory remote and no alarm sounds, you don’t have a factory alarm system. Thus no alarm system meant no “OEM disarm” wire was needed to connect (this wasn’t immediately obvious to me as I was just following the color coded wire by wire guide and couldn’t find this nonexistent wire).4. Another hard to locate set of wires: lock and unlock. The door lock relay controller (if you have factory remote lock) is behind the brake panel on the back wall (firewall) of the dash. The two wires are on the right plug of two plugs in this module. Ask MPC if you need to ground the purple wire in the same pin where the lock/unlock is. I was too dense to determine this myself. For my f150 with negative lock/unlock signals it needed a ground not tie in to the +12V wire. The tipsheet said as much and gives accurate vehicle wire colors every time. It’s amazing.4. Do yourself a favor and take the drivers seat out. With power seats there are 2 plugs in addition to four bolts needed for this. At 6’2″ I was able to lay in the floor board to get to the lock and unlock wires but oh it was cramp city. I’d take it out if I had to do it again.5. the hood safety pin works by grounding the system if the hood is open preventing it from starting while the hood is up and surprising/injuring a poor mechanic. Use a multimeter to check that there is zero resistance (short) when hood is open and infinite (overload, OL) when the hood is closed because you can’t see it when the hood is closed oddly enough. As the manual says of course you should check all connections with a multimeter but this one in particular is guesswork without testing.6. googling the install I found this forum post: https://www.the12volt.com/installbay/forum_posts.asp?tid=134275 that has overlap with this kit (again you personally need some expertise or patience to interpret whether your vehicle is the same and make adjustments as no kit or install is likely to be exact given the huge number of former makes, models, trims, mods etc out there. I’m just super thankful MPC puts these kits together for dummies like me)7. Once you program the bypass security module (their tipsheet pulls only the sequence relevant to your vehicle from an index of possibilities which is super helpful)8. Operating the remote: You have a lock button, unlock button, button to toggle between multiple vehicles (not used unless you get more than one kit? I have no idea), and the remote start button. Press and hold the remote start button for 1.5 sec, and here’s what it does: the system locks the doors (for security purposes), flashes the parking lights (to say hey I’m working), starts the engine. If you press the brake pedal or leave it for 15 min without the key the engine will shut off (again security/safety). Some timings and button press sequences are customizable but this is how it ships. Custom programming details are in the tipsheet.Hope this review helps anyone giving it a go! The internet is a wild place especially when you are referencing posts on archaic message boards from the early two thousands but between googling, the tipsheet, and MPC customer support I got it done. (should have just emailed MPC rather than googling but I’m stubborn and have toxic masculinity).5 stars. Install it correctly and you’ll love it.

Do not be discouraged by the lack of reviews on here. I bought this thinking I might have to take it somewhere to be installed, turns out, I was wrong! After looking over the tip sheet provided via qr code or website link, it was way easier than I would’ve imagined! I would gladly buy another kit and install myself if I had to! It took me about 2.5-3 days (1 day was a rain out) and it worked perfectly! My only “complaint” was after I installed it, the lock/unlock was working but not the start itself. Turns out (after a bit of research,) it was in valet mode. After I figured out how to turn that off, it worked like a dream 🙂

It’s a great product. You do really need some experience in installing one but it’s still straightforward

First the good stuff. Their kit worked the first time and seems well made. Instructions are mostly clear (but see below) – they are not easy to follow per se but if you have done a car stereo install or some such electrical work then it is maybe only twice as much work. Not bad at all.Now the reasons I took one star off. MPC suggests that some connections can be made via t-tap and they even provide t-tap connectors but all this is misleading. AWG21 wires they provide in some ribbon cables should not be used with t-tap and cannot be crimped reliably with the t-tap sizes they provided. The other issue is minor but when you do something like a stereo install you can srip wires in a million ways (even with your trusty knife) because you do electrical work on a harness on your table. But for this install you really need a wire stripper and specifically the more modern type which will cut insulation in the middle of the wire. Those are cheap but without a wire stripper you are looking at a very tough job. A warning about the necessary tools would have been nice. Also, the instructions they provide are basically copied and pasted from online forum posts which are easy to find and those pictures apply to the specific vehicle of the poster. In my case the PKE module was in a very different spot and orientation from what they suggested. Oh and one last minor thing: their LCD remote has a USB charging port which is great but it is a mini-USB and they do not supply a charger. Does anyone even have mini-USB cables in their homes anymore?Anyways, to be clear: there are minor annoyances with this kit but it works and is not too difficult to get working.
