I used a separately purchased longer Big-Sert insert than provided in the kit for extra holding power, but whether you use the ones with the kit or extra long ones, the procedure is the same.Follow the instructions exactly. Read twice to 3 times, do a dry run or two before cutting any metal for real, and you’ll have a near perfect repair. Do not attempt to cut corners. Use the tap guide sold separately to get the threads properly aligned if you are doing the block repair while the engine is still in the car. Works wonderfully when you use proper care and workmanship. The engine now has about 1,500 miles on it including open road trip 80 mph cruising and dense urban stop and go rush hour traffic since the repair. This is like performing major surgery – only use when truly indicated, where a previous TimeSert or Helicoil repair has failed, and be aware when you have to resort to this to fix a stripped out hole for a cylinder head bolt in an aluminum block, you have exactly one shot at doing it right. However, when done properly, the result is like new performance. It was worth every single penny it cost. Compared to the cost of a new engine (or another car) or having to have the bad hole welded and re-bored and tapped at a machine shop, it saved me thousands of dollars.I recommend this for any second repair where there is still enough metal thickness (at least the diameter of the original bolt) surrounding the insert to hold the full tension forces under maximum load at operating temperature.

This product will not work for repairing a previously repaired threaded hole IF the first insert completely pulled out of the repair hole. The kit contains the exact same size drill bit and tap used for installing the first insert (keyed TimeSert).

These worked beautifully. We bought this set to repair a BMW 3.0 m54 block. Some of the old inserts were still in the block so we used those to make a jig out of a hardwood board and a brass nipple. Drilled a home for the brass fitting and bonded it to the wood using jb weld then use a drill press with the big from this kit to enlarge the hole in the fitting. From there just mark the location of one adjacent head bolt hole by measuring. Don’t worry about the angle yet. You will need the other adjacent hole as well so you can triangulate that using the fitting and the other hole. By triangulating you don’t have to measure angles. Drill the adjacent holes in the wood using a bit that is as close to the head bolt diameter as possible. Make sure the bolts can still move in the holes though. Very some m10x1. 5 nuts. Thread the bolts with nuts on them through the holes into existing inserts (you may have to work your way across). You should be able to line up the brass fitting hole and the existing hole in the block by eye. Then tighten down the nuts to hold the jig in place. Now you can drill the hole in the block. If you are drilling out the old inserts, be careful, the bit will grab and tweak your arm pretty good. Make sure you order the 25.4mm long inserts instead of the short ones that come with this set.

I had an issue with a broken bolt and damaged threads on my car’s transmission, for one of the mounts. I tried unsuccessfully repairing it with a helicoil, and a standard time-sert kit before using the oversized kit. I needed the oversized version because the hole was too far opened up for the regular version to work and bolt the bolt tight. This product was the answer. would definitely recommend this as a good permanent repair to damaged threads where a previous repair attempt went south. I just wish I had discovered this before the attempt at repair!
