Atwood’s Surge Brake Actuators provide high quality fit and finish with a specially engineered design that creates more pressure at the brakes than typical in line actuator systems. Atwood’s surge brake actuators have a lock-out feature that allows use with standard hydraulic brakes for backing up. This means no need for specific free-backing brakes. For added safety, the surge actuator’s breakaway device will set the trailer brakes automatically should separation from the tow vehicle occur. This is my second experience with the same product. This model hitch came with my Four Winns boat trailer from the factory. The first one was difficult to lock and release. The release tab was hard to move in either direction and the tab finally broke. I ordered a rebuild kit (just to get a new release tab) and found it impossible to install although I am an engineer and good with my hands. I resorted to purchasing an all new unit. It was easy to install but this one had the same problem with locking and releasing. It is not a smooth operation in either direction. I was finally able to use a flat bladed screw driver from underneath to pry the locking tongue so it engaged the ball. From underneath it did not take much pressure to move the tongue forward and then I was able to easily move the locking tab into place with very little force. This will be my standard practice from now on. Getting the tongue to release even after unlocking the tab is also problematic as it does not pivot out of the way when the tab is released. Raising the trailer tongue with the jack put upward pressure on the hitch and it eventually popped off suddenly. I did not try prying the hitch tongue back (which I will the next time). This same model hitch has been manufactured for at least ten years so you would think that all the bugs had been worked out. If you have an option, I would not purchase this hitch. I needed a direct, bot-in replacement so I went with it and had the same negative results. I noticed that Four Winns trailers do not use this model any longer. Finally, the paint on the brake cylinder is very poor. It started rusting before it ever got close to a body of water.

I bought this for the parts to rebuild a welded on actuator on my camper. It was cheaper to buy this and take all the parts off to use on my trailer. The parts worked great for my rebuild but I did need to make a new master cylinder gasket for my rebuild, but that is a small price to pay for saving $50+ over buying all the parts individually.

I ordered this for my brothers 30 year old car trailer & it works great & fit’s exactly like the original. My brother told me after he rebuilt the brakes on the trailer & put Dot 5 brake fluid in it it’s never stop like this when he first bought the car trailer. When I looked this up I used the original part # to get the exact one. I’d recommend this product it’s a good unit.

I only received the shell of the hitch, nothing else. It’s definitely a manufacturer issue, not Amazon. Atwood at its best….

The top of the master cylinder does not seal properly and rain water runs into the brake fluid through the top bolt holes.Bad design as the lid of the master cylinder is the main frame of the the surge brake unit. Don’t forget to cover it with a trash bag to keep the rain out
