NOT -MIG- Welding Wire – Actually FCAW Welding WireHigher Quality like you buy at the Welding StoreI am quite disappointed at all the misinformation provided on the web site description and on the package itself.This welding wire is NOT MIG welding wire. MIG stands for Metal INERT GAS. A MIG wire welding machine has a tube that serves two functions: 1) the electrically energized welding wire travels in the tube; 2) Inert Gases travel through the tube to bathe and shield the welding site to keep out the Oxygen rich atmosphere.This electric arc welding wire has a Flux Core that provides its own shielding gas when the chemicals of the flux core are heated and turn into the shielding gas. This type of electric wire welding is called FCAW; the initials stand for Flux Core Arc Welding. In a FCAW electric welding machine the tube only provides a path for the electrically energized welding wire to travel.This FCAW “E308LFC-O” welding wire is for welding various Stainless Steel alloys and it works very well for that purpose. However, if you follow the website’s incorrect information you will waste your money using this expensive welding wire and you will produce poor quality welds.I use the less expensive standard NON-Stainless Steel welding wire “E71T-GS” for welding ordinary steel alloys. I have found that the ARCCAPTAIN brand to be high quality electric welding wire. It is sealed in a foil pouch and it is very consistent in high quality.I can comment with some experience and knowledge. I took welding classes in High School and in College in the 70s. I am NOT a professional welder but I do a lot of metal fabrication. I have gas and electric welding systems. I have a couple of Oxygen Acetylene welding setups, an AC-DC 220 VAC stick welder, and a very old combination convertible MIG or Flux Cored Wire welder. To convert my wire welder to use Flux Cored wire, I have to change the polarity and install knurled wire driving wheels.ARCCAPTAIN is my go to welding wire brand either Stainless Steel alloys or ordinary steel alloys. Using FCAW wire to get good welds requires very good surface preparation compared to say using a 6011 stick and welding right through greasy paint on rusted metal. FCAW welding can produce superior weld beads and joints, that look like an artist caulked the joints, but only on perfectly cleaned and prepared metal. You can buy cheaper cost wire but you get cheaper quality wire and inconsistent welds that you have to spend more time correcting and redoing. Life is too short to waste it fixing and re-fixing your poor quality welds caused by using poorer quality wire.Unfortunately, my garage workshop is unheated until deep winter when I spend a lot of time running the wood stove. So, my work space has what is know as “a condensing atmosphere”. Inside my workshop water vapor condenses as dew on my equipment; just like it you see on your car parked outside. The dew inside my workshop is not as heavy as the dew outside, but it is still a problem. This brand of Flux Core Wire comes as securely sealed away from the elements as these spools are sealed in a metalized plastic VACUUM BAG. So, I can keep it stored in my workshop without worrying about it deteriorating from the high humidity condensing atmosphere of my workshop.

I decided to weld some stainless tubing for my boat. I would typically go to a welder but decided yo do it myself this time. The weld was remarkably even, clean and without voids. I did not use a shielding gas. There were spatters but I used a flapwheel to clean the weld and surrounding surface and it looks almost professional.

I bought this to weld a new angle handle on my Mosin Nagant bolt action rifle. Since it is stainless steel it polished up nice.No gas was required which made things easier.

I was given a repair on a headrest for a barbershop chair. It was 16ga stainless. I haven’t had the need to weld stainless in 20 years and couldn’t find my roll of stainless steel mig wire. I found this on Amazon with next day delivery and bought.It was waiting for me when I got home. I pulled out my Miller 211 and replaced the MIG gun with the spool gun. I pulled out my roll of Hobart 4943 (the best aluminum wire, but hard to find) and unwrapped the new roll of ARCCAPTAIN ER308L .030. I cut the end of the wire where it went through the hole in the side of the spool, and the spring came unwound. I straightened it out and wrapped some masking tape around the spool to keep it from unwinding further.Once I got it loaded in the spool gun, I didn’t feel like switching tanks from C25 to TriMix. All I needed to do was make 3 tiny tack welds. I made them on the bottom of the bracket, hit it with the flap disk, finished.The pictures show the bottom where I made the tacks, but I definitely had 100% penetration when you look at the top side that didn’t get polished with the flap disk.The reason I’m only giving it 4 stars is that I only used about 3 inches of wire which isn’t enough to go overboard on stars. No spatter; that’s a good thing. Just have some tape handy when you unwrap it.
