I bought bought these so that we could be warm when I take my kids to school on those cold early mornings. I was hoping that it would get warm air coming out of the vents sooner after starting the engine, which it does not… At least not very well. That being said, I do notice that my engine no longer makes the odd noises it used to when I start it on those cold mornings.Also, they were super easy to install, & they heat up surprisingly fast.

I will be using these to keep a “tote” (275 gallon water tank) from freezing.Yes, not “intended purpose” but they will work fine (but see below).I need to do some more design work to make sure I don’t soften/melt the plastic tank.Initial testing, withOUT being attached to anything, shows a temperature cycle range of 120-300F.Yes – 300F on the high side. Haven’t quite figured where the thermoswitch is actually set (any device like this will act a bit differently when actually mounted (like a pipe heat tape does) maybe when attached to some thermal mass, it’ll flatten it’s cycling range.Point is – these are capable of getting HOT – rather quickly. I don’t think they are defective, but be aware – oil pans are aluminum or steel, barrels and tanks are commonly plastic nowadays, and 300F is no bueno.If you’re going to go off-book with something, it’s all “on you”, so be aware of things.That being said, I would think one per typical “city car” will work OK – big V8 or a diesel, use both.Hmm. Maybe too much heat for a battery, but ya gotta cover that base for your car, too.

As a mechanic i needed a quick and easy solution when the original engine block heater in my wife’s car died , and the forecast was calling for minus 40 weather in 3 days. Changing a block heater in the coolant system is a PITA and often leaks again. I shopped around a few on amazon and chose these cause of wattage and safety thermal switch. You must clean your spot on the engine oil pan VERY well. If the pan has too much curve you can put it on a vertical flat side of pan. The 3m adhesive sticks very well if surface is clean and at room temperature , dont try sticking it in the cold. At minus 40 degrees celsius my wife’s car started immediately and made the same sound as if it were only minus 10. The extension cord is high quality and remains flexible in the cold. I highly recommend this product , high quality versus price ratio. Can also be used on transmissions , hydraulic oil tanks etc.

I purchased these to keep the batteries on my two frame generators warm for winter usage. One works well, while the other gets so hot I burned a finger when I touched the side to check and see if it was over heating.

I made the mistake of plugging one in while in the house, just to test it. It heated very fast, and nearly melted the cover that you are supposed to peel off before sticking it to a clean oil pan. It took two days for the smell to leave the house. I was thinking about putting one of these underneath my car battery, but they get so hot that I won’t, for fear they’d damage the battery case. Very effective on an oil pan.
