The quality of this stuff is what it is, and there just aren’t any other choices out there if you want these things. That being said, I feel like I got a great deal here. I bought this hood protector/bug shield, along with the protector for the back side of the rear seats in a combined shipping deal. Well packaged and shipped from the east coast to northwest Nebraska, I paid less for the whole package, including S&H, than what I could buy just the bug shield for at the Subaru dealer where I bought my new car. I think there’s something wrong with that picture, and need I say more? Thanks Patrick’s Accessories!! As far as ease of installation, I didn’t find it too complicated, and I’m not a professional mechanic, just a farmer. The packaged instructions are no doubt a little on the sketchy side though. There are some good installation tips in some of the other reviews here. Check them out, and buy with confidence. You can do it!!

The mounting hardware is quite small so if you do not have nimble fingers you might want some help. But otherwise it took me about 20min to install. One piece of advise, put a tarp or sheet or something over the engine compartment while you are working on it so if you drop any of the pieces they aren’t gone forever. This looks OEM (it’s actually stamped Subaru?!?!) and fits perfectly on my 2013 Outback. Exactly what I needed for the gravel coated northern roads.

Terrible terrible instructions. Design does nothing to protect the hood since it lays almost flat on the hood. Should have returned it but it got damaged trying to attach it to the hood.

Ok, first let me say that this part fits perfectly on my 2014 Outback, it was designed for it.I was skeptical at first but I read Mike’s review and bought it, good deal I have no problem with the instructions. If you think these instructions are hard try reading instructions from IKEA!Couple hints…1. Follow instructions and line up the two middle brackets so the will line up your deflector, do not install the screws yet, apply the 3M clear protector and line up the brackets without screws.2. Follow Step 3 and fit up the brackets over the clear 3M protector and just keep it snug for now.The white plastic keepers (part E) go into the square hole in the bracket, the gray deflector keepers go into the elongated hole(look up Mikes pictures), look up my First pic.3. Line up the deflector over the brackets and put the hold down screws snug so you can adjust the whole thing in the brackets left right to center it on the hood. Once centered, I used permanent marker and marked a location of where the other holes go on the hood so I know where to apply the clear tape.4. Remove the deflector and clean the spots where you going to put the other four brackets, install clear tape and put the brackets on, you will have to adjust exact location later.5. Picture 3 shows how the stainless steel screw with washer catches the plastic grommet over the rubber seal. If you like me, and have more power than God in your hands, have your wife or GF do it for you. This stuff is plastic, small and too much force will brake it.6. Now that your brackets are secure, dbl check your location of the 4 outer holes with the brackets and the deflector, only keep the two middle screws snug do not install outer screws yet. Check pics 4 & 5.7. Once you got everything lined up, tighten the two middle screws in the brackets first then the middle screws and finally the outer screws. You may still have to adjust the outer bracket but only very little at this point.NOTE: This stuff is plastic, small parts, and not designed for military use. If you use too much force, it will break. Have your wife or GF get it good and tight without breaking anything. See pic 6.It takes about 30 min to install, take your time and follow instructions, easy job.

Perhaps I didn’t read the description closely enough, but this does not fit the 2017 Subaru Outback, so it has been returned for credit (note, it was received at warehouse ten days ago, so the credit should have been posted).Regardless, from what I did see, the item is a well made plastic, properly packaged. There were no manufacturing remnants (sharp edges, stringers, or other defects) and the plastic appeared to be of similar sturdiness to other bug deflectors I have had. All hardware appeared to be provided. As others have noted, the instructions are lacking, but a quick google search found videos for similar items.I know this is sold as a hood protector, but the real use is bug deflector and this might fail there – it just doesn’t have the higher profile I’m used to, which would create an airflow disruption and move bugs up and out. However, I did not get a chance to test that.In my case, the piece was obviously for a different vehicle (was about six inches to short), but otherwise not bad at all.

It’s a nice original Subaru part to let your Subaru stand out a little bit it’s really easy to install. I suggest you watch the YouTube video rather than trying to follow the instructions came with it.
